I fell in love with the Sony Cybershot because of its easy portability, fixed focal length, flash, and great image quality. There is something unique about these early digicams. They give your new photographs a nostalgic quality. High school in the 2020’s feels like high school in the 2000’s.
How this started: when our friend Thomas Bell and his family moved to Switzerland, they gifted us a box of cameras. Inside, I discovered the Sony Cybershot. After doing some research I found it was from 2005, making it almost as old as me. I began experimenting with it on a trip to LA in June 2021, and continued to use it into the school year because of its portability and fun sliding lens cover and simplicity. I realize in my photography: I either like full manual control or none at all. The Cybershot has been a great camera to come back to when I want something refreshing instead of film photography. Here I will present some of the photos I took with the Cybershot.
Documenting Senior year through digicam.
There is something beautiful about digicam photography, the flash allows you to quickly capture moments in time. The screen is fairly small compared to modern smartphones so I have been pretty much “spraying and praying” by pointing it at the subject(s) and imagining the composition in my mind. The fixed 30mm is fair and forgiving, sometimes the unintentional crop of the subject becomes “aesthetic.”

With the Cybershot, I have been taking portraits of the people I encounter throughout my day. It will be fun looking back on this one day.
